Bereshit 22;1-19 בראשית כב, א - יט העקדה THE AKEDAH 1. ו י ה י א ח ר ה ד ב רים ה א לּ ה ו ה א לה ים נ סּ ה Va-ye-hi a-char ha-de-va-rim ha-e -leh ve -ha-e-lo-him ni-sa and it was after the words the these and the G-d tested א ת א ב רה ם ו יּ אמ ר א ל יו א ב רה ם et av-ra-ham va-yo -mer e-lav (:) av-ra-ham (d.o.) Isaac ו ל ך ל ך א ל א רץ ה מּ ריּ ה ו ה ע ל ה ve-lech le-cha el e -rets ha-mo-ri-yah ve -ha-a-le -hu and go for yourself to land (of) the Moriah and offer up him (the land of Moriah) שׁ ם ל ע ל ה ע ל א ח ד ה ה רים א שׁ ר sham le-o-lah al a-chad he -ha-rim a -sher there as a burnt offering upon one (of) the mountains which
א מ ר א ל י ך : 3. ו יּ שׁ כּ ם א ב רה ם בּ בּ קר o-mar e-lei -cha : 3. va-yash-kem av-ra-ham ba-bo -ker I will tell to you and rose early Abraham in the morning ו יּ ח ב ש א ת ח מ רוֹ ו יּ ק ח א ת שׁ נ י va-ya-cha-vosh et cha-mo-ro va-yi-kach et she-nei and saddled (d.o.) donkey his and he took (d.o.) two of נ ע ריו א תּוֹ ו א ת י צ ח ק בּ נוֹ ו י ב ק ע ne-a-rav i -to ve-et yits-chak be-no va-ye-va-ka young men his with him and (d.o.) Isaac son his and cleaved, split ע צ י ע ל ה ו יּ קם ו יּ ל ך א ל ה מּ קוֹם a-tsei o-lah * va-ya-kam va-ye-lech el ha-ma-kom wood pieces of burnt and they arose and went to the place offering * *o-lah comes from the root עלה to go up, in the sense of the smoke and energy of the burning offering goes up in the air, and the spiritual aspect goes up to G-d. א שׁ ר א מ ר לוֹ ה א לה ים : 4. בּ יּוֹם ה שּׁ ל ישׁ י a-sher a-mar lo ha-e-lo-him : 4. ba-yom ha-she-li-shi which said to him the God : on the day the third ו יּ שּ א א ב רה ם א ת ע ינ יו ו יּ רא א ת ה מּ קוֹם va-yi-sa av-ra-ham et ei-nav va-yar et ha-ma-kom and raised Abraham (d.o.) eyes his and saw (d.o.) the place
מ רח ק : 5. ו יּ אמ ר א ב רה ם א ל נ ע ריו me-ra-chok : 5. va-yo -mer av-ra-ham el ne -a-rav from far : and said Abraham to young men his שׁ ב ל כ ם פּ ה ע ם ה ח מוֹר ו א נ י she-vu la-chem poh im ha-cha-mor va-a-ni sit (imp., pl.) for yourselves here with the donkey and I ו ה נּ ע ר נ ל כ ה ע ד כּ ה ו נ שׁ תּ ח ו ה ve-ha-na -ar nel-chah ad koh ve-nish-ta-cha -veh and the boy we will go so far and we will bow down, bend low ו נ שׁ ב ה א ל יכ ם : 6. ו יּ ק ח א ב רה ם א ת ע צ י ve -na-shu-vah a -lei-chem : 6. va-yi-kach av-ra-ham et a-tsei and we will return* to you (pl.) and took Abraham (d.o.) wood pieces *the ah on the end of a word implies a sense of motion toward ה ע ל ה ו יּ ש ם ע ל י צ ח ק בּ נוֹ ו יּ ק ח ha-o-lah va-ya-sem al yits-chak be-no va-yi-kach of the burnt offering and placed upon Isaac son his and he took בּ י דוֹ א ת ה א שׁ ו א ת ה מּ א כ ל ת ו יּ ל כ be-ya-do et ha-esh ve -et ha-ma-a-che -let va-yel-chu in hand his (d.o.) the fire and (d.o.) the butcher knife and they went
שׁ נ יה ם י ח ד ו : 7. ו יּ אמ ר י צח ק א ל א ב רה ם she-nei-hem yach-dav : 7. va-yo -mer yits-chak el av-ra-ham two of them together : and said Isaac to Abraham א ב יו ו יּ אמ ר א ב י ו יּ אמ ר ה נּ נּ י ב נ י a-viv va-yo -mer a-vi va-yo -mer hi-ne -ni ve-ni father his and he said father my and he said here I am son my ו יּ אמ ר ה נּ ה ה א שׁ ו ה ע צ ים ו א יּ ה ה שּ ה va-yo -mer hi-neh ha-esh ve-ha-e-tsim ve-a-yeh ha-seh * and he said behold the fire and the wood but where (is) the lamb* *seh = young sheep, goat, or calf ל ע ל ה : 8. ו יּ אמ ר אב רה ם א לה ים י רא ה לּוֹ le-o-lah : 8. va-yo -mer av-ra-ham E-lo-him yir-eh lo for burnt offering and said Abraham, G-d will see to it,m. ה שּ ה ל ע ל ה בּ נ י ו יּ ל כ שׁ נ יה ם י ח ד ו : ha-seh le-o-lah be-ni va-yel-chu she-nei-hem yach-dav : the lamb for burnt son my and they walked two of them together offering 9. ו י ב א א ל ה מּ קוֹם א שׁ ר א מ ר לוֹ ה א לה ים 9. va-ya-vo -u el ha-ma-kom a-sher a-mar lo ha-e-lo-him and they came to the place which told to him (the) G-d
ו יּ ב ן שׁ ם א ב רה ם א ת ה מּ ז בּ ח ו יּ ע ר ך va-yi-ven sham av-ra-ham et ha-miz-be -ach va-ya-a-roch and he built there Abraham (d.o.) the altar(place of and set in order* sacrifice) א ת ה ע צ ים ו יּ ע קד* א ת י צ ח ק בּ נוֹ ו יּ ש ם et ha-e-tzim va-ya-a -kod * et yits-chak be-no va-ya-sem (d.o.)-the wood and bound (d.o.) Isaac son his and placed pieces hands and feet *this is the word from which Akedah is taken. the root is עקד which means to bind hand and foot---this is a hapax legomenon in the Torah, occurring only this once. א תוֹ ע ל ה מּ ז בּ ח מ מ ע ל ל ע צ ים : 10. ו יּ שׁ ל ח o-to al ha-miz-be -ach mi-ma -al la-e-tzim : 10. va-yish-lach him upon the altar from above, to the and stretched out on top of wood pieces : א ב רה ם א ת י דוֹ ו יּ ק ח א ת ה מּ א כ ל ת ל שׁ ח ט av-ra-ham et ya-do va-yi-kach et ha-ma-a-che -let lish-chot Abraham (d.o.) hand his and took (d.o.) the butcher knife to slaughter א ת בּ נוֹ : 11. ו יּ ק רא א ל יו מ ל א ך יי מ ן et be-no : 11. va-yik-ra e-lav mal-ach Adonai min (d.o.) son his and cried out to him (a) messenger of Adonai from
ה שּׁ מ י ם ו יּ אמ ר א ב רה ם א ב רה ם ו יּ אמ ר ha-sha-ma -yim va-yo -mer av-ra-ham av-ra-ham ** va-yo -mer the heavens and said Abraham Abraham and he said **when a name is called out two times, it signifies affection. ה נּ נ י : 12. ו יּ אמ ר א ל תּ שׁ ל ח י ד ך א ל ה נּ ע ר hi-ne -ni : 12. va-yo -mer al tish-lach yad-cha el ha-na -ar here I am: and he said not you will hand your toward the young extend man ו א ל תּ ע ש לוֹ מ א מ ה כּ י ע תּ ה י דע תּ י ve al ta-as lo me -u -mah ki a-tah ya-da -e-ti and not you will do to him anything at all because now I am knowing כּ י י רא א לה ים א תּ ה ו לא ח ש כ תּ א ת בּ נ ך ki ye-re E-lo-him a-tah ve-lo cha-sach -ta et bin-cha that in awe of G-d (are) you and not you withheld (d.o.) son your א ת י ח י ד ך מ מּ נּ י : 13. ו יּ שּ א א ב רה ם et ye-chid-cha mi-me -ni : 13. va-yi-sa av-ra-ham (d.o.) only one your from Me : and lifted up Abraham א ת ע ינ יו ו יּ רא ו ה נּ ה א י ל א ח ר* נ א ח ז et ei-nav va-yar ve-hi-neh a -yil a-char * ne-e-chaz (d.o.) eyes his and saw and behold a ram after* seized *this may be a scribal error which should be אחד e-chad, one; or it could be the only Irish dialect in the Torah, a ram after being seized in the thicket...
בּ סּ ב ך בּ ק רנ יו ו יּ ל ך א ב רה ם ו יּ ק ח ba-se-vach be-kar-nav va-ye-lech av-ra-ham va-yi-kach in the thicket by horns his and went Abraham and took א ת ה א י ל ו יּ ע ל ה ל ע ל ה תּ ח ת בּ נוֹ : et ha-a -yil va-ya-a-le -hu le-o-lah ta -chat be-no : (d.o.) the ram and offered up him for a burnt in place of son his offering 14. ו יּ ק רא א ב רה ם שׁ ם ה מּ קוֹם ה ה א 14. va-yik-ra av-ra-ham shem ha-ma-kom ha-hu and called Abraham name of the place that יי י רא ה א שׁ ר י א מ ר ה יּוֹם בּ ה ר יי Adonai yir-eh a-sher ye-a-mer ha-yom be -har Adonai Adonai will see which will be said today in mountain Adonai י רא ה : 15. ו יּ ק רא מ ל א ך יי א ל א ב רה ם yi-ra-eh : Va-yik-ra mal-ach Adonai el av-ra-ham will be seen : and cried out messenger of G-d to Abraham שׁ נ ית מ ן ה שּׁ מ י ם : 16. ו יּ אמ ר בּ י נ שׁ בּ ע תּ י she-nit min ha-sha-ma -yim : 16. va-yo-mer bi nish-ba -e-ti a second from the heavens : and he said by myself I swore time
נ א ם יי כּ י י ע ן א שׁ ר ע ש ית א ת ה ד ב ר ne um * Adonai ki ya-an a-sher a-si -ta et ha-da-var proclaimed* Adonai for because of which you did (d.o.) the thing *(spoke as a prophet) ה זּה ו לא חש כ תּ א ת בּ נ ך א ת י ח י ד ך : ha-zeh ve-lo cha-sach -ta et bin-cha et ye -chi-de -cha the this and not you withheld (d.o.) son your (d.o.) only one your 17. כּ י ב ר ך א ב רכ ך ו ה רבּ ה א רבּ ה ki va-rech a-va-re-che -cha ve-ha-re-bah ar -beh thus bless * I will bless * you and greatly, much I will increase *see note # 25. א ת ז רע ך כּ כוֹכ ב י ה שּׁ מ י ם ו כ חוֹל et zar-a -cha ke -choch-vei ha-sha-ma -yim ve -cha-chol (d.o.) offspring your like stars of the heavens and like sand א שׁ ר ע ל ש פ ת ה יּ ם ו י רשׁ ז רע ך a -sher al sfat ha-yam ve -yi-rash zar-a -cha which (is) upon shore of the sea and will seize, offspring your take possession of א ת שׁ ע ר א י ב יו : 18. ו ה ת בּ רכ ב ז רע ך et sha -ar oy-vav : 18. ve -hit-bar-chu be -zar-a -cha (d.o.) gate of enemies his : and (they) will be blessed in offspring your
כּ ל גּוֹי י ה א רץ ע קב א שׁ ר שׁ מ ע תּ בּ קל י : kol go-yei ha-a -rets e-kev a -sher sha-ma -e-ta be-ko-li : all nations of the earth in which you heard in voice my consequence of (you obeyed me). 19 ו יּ שׁ ב א ב רה ם א ל נ ע ריו ו יּ קמ 19. va-ya-shav av-ra-ham el ne-a-rav va-ya-ku-mu and returned Abraham to young men his and they got up ו יּ ל כ י ח ד ו א ל בּ א ר שׁ ב ע va-yel-chu yach-dav el be-er sha -va and they returned together to Be er Sheva va-ye-shev av-ra-ham bi-ve -er sha -va: and dwelled Abraham in Be er Sheva. ו יּ שׁ ב א ב רה ם בּ ב א ר שׁ ב ע :
